ABOUT MARK

Bespoke Jewellery, Gemstone Cutting and Goldsmithing

Jewellery begins with the stone

I’m a goldsmith, gemstone cutter and bespoke jeweller with more than 30 years’ experience. I work with exceptional gemstones, creating one-of-a-kind jewellery from finely cut stones where the material, design and craftsmanship are equally important.

A life shaped by gemstones

My relationship with gemstones began in the Australian outback

I grew up in Rubyvale, in Central Queensland’s Gemfields, where my father mined sapphires for almost three decades.

As a child, I was surrounded by rough sapphires and zircons, picking them out of the dirt and keeping them in a tobacco tin like treasure.

It was an unusual childhood, and one that left a lasting impression. What began as a fascination with gemstones became a lifelong interest in their colour, structure and natural character.

THE ART OF THE CUT

Gemstone cutting is at the heart of my practice

I always cut the stones I work with myself, developing faceting shapes that respond to each individual gemstone.

A rough stone can hold unexpected possibilities, subtle shifts of colour, unusual inclusions, a particular depth or luminosity. My role is to uncover what is already there.

THE MAKING

Made by one pair of hands

From the rough gemstone to the finished jewel, I’m involved in every stage of the process. I cut the stones myself and create each piece of bespoke jewellery in my London workshop.

Australian sapphires and gold are central to my work

They are an important connection between my home in the UK and the Australian gemfields.

I have maintained long-standing relationships with independent miners in Central Queensland’s Gemfields, where I can source unusual Australian sapphires and other gemstones directly. The gold I use is sourced from a single mine in Western Australia.

Understanding where my gemstones and gold have come from, and the people involved in finding them, is an important part of how I approach sourcing, cutting and making.

Bespoke jewellery beyond the conventional

I make jewellery for people who are drawn to something beyond the conventional.

A rare gemstone. An unexpected colour. A distinctive cut. A piece made slowly and individually by the person who discovered its potential.

Some pieces begin with a stone I have selected for its particular qualities. Others begin with a commission and a conversation. Either way, the process is personal.
